FC Berlin’s remarkable debut season on the MASL-W stage reached its climax on Friday evening, as the Canadian side faced powerhouse RPFC Dallas in the quarterfinals of the MASL-W Nationals. Entering the match as division champions and the tournament’s third seed, Dallas carried the tag of favourites, while FC Berlin embraced the opportunity to continue writing history in their first-ever appearance at Nationals.
The opening ten minutes reflected the tension and magnitude of the occasion. Both teams played with discipline and structure, limiting chances and keeping the game tight. RPFC Dallas gradually imposed their rhythm, controlling possession and pushing Berlin deeper into their half. The breakthrough came late in the first period. Kenne Kessler opened the scoring for Dallas, before Sofia Muñoz doubled the lead moments later, giving RPFC a 2–0 advantage heading into the break.
The second period followed a similar script. FC Berlin battled to find openings, but repeatedly ran into a well-organized Dallas defence. At the other end, Berlin’s resilience held strong, until the final minutes once again. Muñoz struck for her second of the night, and Taylor Tufts added another shortly after, extending the lead to 4–0 at halftime and putting Dallas firmly in control.
But FC Berlin refused to fade.
The third period saw a renewed and energized Berlin side take the field. Their persistence paid off when April Syme won possession and delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to Brianne “Bukkets” Desa. Desa made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to open Berlin’s account and spark belief. Yet, in a frustratingly familiar pattern, RPFC responded just before the end of the period. Muñoz completed her hat trick with another timely goal, restoring the four-goal cushion at 5–1.
The final period, however, showcased the very best of FC Berlin. Desa struck again, once more assisted by the ever-influential Syme, before Muñoz added her fourth of the match in an outstanding individual display. Berlin continued to push forward with determination and pride, and their efforts were rewarded. Violet Hipkin found the back of the net after being set up by Desa, and shortly after, Marisa Oliveira finished a well-worked play assisted by Hipkin. A late goal from Leslie Razo in the final minutes sealed the result for RPFC Dallas, but the scoreboard, ultimately closer at 7–4, better reflected the spirit and fight shown by FC Berlin, particularly in the second half.
RPFC Dallas would go on to reach the championship game, eventually falling to the Iowa Demon Hawks, the tournament’s eventual winners. For FC Berlin, the final whistle marked the end of a historic journey. While the result was not the one they had hoped for, the achievement of reaching the national quarterfinals in their debut season stands as a testament to the club’s growth, resilience, and ambition. Competing against some of the top teams in the United States, this small, community-driven club proved it belongs on the big stage.
Several players delivered standout performances. Hunter Jones was a commanding presence, April Syme dictated play with intelligence and vision, and Brianne “Bukkets” Desa made a decisive impact with two goals and an assist. But it was Violet Hipkin who earned Player of the Match honours. With a goal, an assist, relentless attacking pressure, and a tireless defensive work rate, Hipkin delivered a complete and inspiring performance from start to finish.
Though the journey ends here, this is far from the final chapter. For FC Berlin, it is a foundation; one built on belief, unity, and ambition.
