Every successful team needs players who quietly do the hard work that allows others to shine, and Rebecca Draeger has built a reputation as exactly that kind of competitor. Known for her composure on the ball and tireless work rate, she provides stability and balance whenever she steps onto the field for FC Berlin.
Draeger’s journey began at Waterloo FC, where she progressed through the grassroots system and honed her skills over many years. That foundation of technical training, combined with her intelligence and determination, has shaped her into a midfielder capable of controlling games, breaking up opposition attacks, and helping transition play from defense to attack. Players like Draeger often form the backbone of a squad; the ones who make sure the team continues to move forward even in the most demanding moments of a match.
Draeger’s impact on the field has also been recognized through her achievements at both the club and university levels. During her time with Waterloo FC, she was named League 2 Midfielder of the Year, highlighting her influence and consistency in the middle of the pitch. At the university level with Guelph, she made an immediate impression by earning Rookie of the Year honours in her first season, and continued to build on that success by being named a Second Team OUA All-Star in her second year. These accolades reflect not only her individual quality, but also her ability to perform and grow at increasingly competitive levels.
At FC Berlin, Draeger’s team-first mentality fit perfectly with the club’s identity. In a team that prides itself on effort, unity, and resilience, she has brought a dependable presence that teammates can count on every time they step onto the pitch.
When did you first start playing soccer, and what inspired you to take up the sport?
I first started playing soccer when I was six, and it was all because of my older brothers. They were already in love with the sport, and I wanted to match their passion. My family didn’t just sign us up, but they gave us the space and encouragement to explore different sports. Soccer was the one I kept coming back to, especially because I wanted to keep up with my brothers and really prove myself.
How did your time at Waterloo FC shape you as a player?
My time at Waterloo FC was foundational. I went through the grassroots program to the Ontario Provincial Development League (OPDL) and then progressed through the League1 Ontario pathway. Along the way, I worked with a variety of dedicated coaches and driven teammates, each one pushing me to see new sides of the game. That constant challenge fueled my love for soccer and the great people I’ve met along this journey.
How would you describe your style of play to someone who hasn’t seen you play before?
My style of play is all about giving 110%. I focus on staying disciplined in defence, but I also love connecting the play and pushing forward. I thrive in a fast-paced game, staying engaged both defensively and in building our attack.
What part of the game do you enjoy the most: defending, distributing the ball, or helping create attacking chances?
I enjoy all parts of the game, but I especially love helping create attacking chances. It’s really rewarding to look back at a play and realize that, even if I didn’t get the assist or goal, I helped set everything up and keep the attack moving forward.
Is there a match or moment in your soccer journey that you will always remember?
One of the most memorable moments in my soccer journey was being named Rookie of the Year at the University of Guelph in my first year. It was my first big varsity-level award, and it gave me some extra confidence, where I realized that all that hard work was paying off, and it really fueled my drive for the seasons ahead.
What has your experience been like being part of FC Berlin and its team environment?
My experience with FC Berlin has been incredible. The team is really supportive, and the atmosphere is both fun and incredibly competitive. Everyone works hard, and that energy really pushes me to keep improving every day.
What makes this group of players special to you?
I think we’re all here to play for fun, but it’s also a really competitive environment. What’s special is that everyone brings a lot of experience, and that pushes me to learn every day, from their skills, their mindset, and their approach to the game.
What is one aspect of your game you are currently focused on improving?
I'm currently focused on improving my finishing technique. As a midfielder, I also work on my field awareness, so being able to spot a switch or a pass that sets up the team, and keeping calm when we need to control the tempo.
Who has had the biggest influence on your development as a player?
On a personal level, my biggest influences have been my parents and my older brothers, who got me started. They’ve always supported me with every opportunity, from my club days to university. And of course, my coaches have had a huge impact, especially my current coach, Melanie, who’s been a role model and someone who has always shown great belief in me since I was younger.
