Great teams are built on strong foundations, and in soccer that foundation often begins with the defenders who organize, anticipate, and quietly shut down attacks before they become dangerous. For FC Berlin, Jasmine Burke brings exactly that kind of stability to the back line.
A native of Guelph, Ontario, Burke has built an impressive career in university soccer with the University of Guelph women’s program, where she established herself as a key figure in the Gryphons’ defensive unit. Playing primarily as a centre back, Burke combines physical presence with strong positional awareness, helping her team maintain one of the more disciplined defensive structures in the conference.
Her performances in Ontario University Athletics have earned recognition at the conference level. Burke was named a West Division Second-Team All-Star, an honour that reflects both her defensive reliability and her leadership on the field.
Over multiple seasons, Burke has been a mainstay in the Gryphons’ defence, contributing not only with strong defensive play but also with the occasional attacking contribution from set pieces and late runs forward.
Beyond the university game, Burke has also competed in Ontario’s high-level semi-professional environment with Guelph United FC, appearing in over 30 matches across League1 Ontario seasons and continuing to represent her hometown club.
Now with FC Berlin, Burke adds another layer of experience and composure to the squad. Calm on the ball and confident in the tackle, she embodies the kind of defender every team values; dependable, disciplined, and always ready to put the team first.
You grew up in Guelph; how did your soccer journey begin in that community?
Growing up in Guelph really allowed me to establish the basics that catapulted my career. I had some really amazing coaches who pushed and inspired me.
We are a tight-knit community and always have connections which were really helpful at such a young age. I then had the opportunity to leave Guelph and travel across Ontario playing for different teams, coming back to the University of Guelph for my varsity career. This was the biggest moment in my career, playing for my hometown, back in my backyard.
What first attracted you to playing as a defender?
What first attracted me to playing as a defender was the challenge and responsibility that come with it. I started as a fullback, which was nice, being able to join the attack, but then I shifted more centrally.
Being a center back can be really rewarding. Being able to read the game, make key tackles, maintain the ball and be the backbone of the backline. Over time, I came to really enjoy the strategic side of defending, not only physically, which has made me stick to it.
