Gabriel Almada27 Aug 2021 - 11:00

Our District ladies go a perfect 8-0-0 this season to claim the title

"A perfect season every way you look at it"
- Gabriel Almada - Manager, Berlin Sports Group

Our District U21 Women's team had their last game of the season last night, and the season ended the same way it had started: with a 2-0 win at Woodside Park in Kitchener! Our team had a fantastic run, winning 8 out of 8 games, with 23 goals scored and only 4 against, and getting shutouts in all but two games. Congratulations!!

Here's a little recap of how our ladies did throughout the season:

20/Jul/2021 - FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's 2-0 U21 Storm FC Girls
A tough match against a very good team. Berlin pushed and pushed but was only able to find its way to the net in the dying minutes of the match. Both goals were scored by Tayler Schade, assisted by Rylea Schade and Sarah Makcrow. Alison van Schaik picked up the shutout and Tayler was named Player of the Match.

27/Jul/2021 - Stratford Strikers GU17/21 0-5 FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's
A very strong game by our ladies. Tons of chances, many shots, a very strong defense, and a very aggressive offense. Goals were scored by Raquel Reyes-Rodríguez, Tayler Schade, Florencia Almada, Tayler again (assisted by Raquel) and Audrey Bennet with a header off a corner by Sarah Makcrow. It was another shutout for Alison Van Schaik, and the POTM went to Lara Lehner in this case. This was Natasha Furzer's last game before she went to school in Upstate NY.

03/Aug/2021 - FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's 2-1 Woolwich Wolfpack U21 Women
Another really hard-fought match. Berlin pushed and pushed but could not break the Woolwich defense until the second half when Raquel Reyes-Rodríguez received a fantastic through ball by Audrey Bennett and scored the first goal (see video). Woolwich tied the game a few minutes later but Alicia Marques collected a rebound and scored the winning goal almost immediately after that. Amelia Reiner picked up the Player of the Match award. This was Alison Van Schaik's last game before heading to school in the US.

10/Aug/2021 - Puslinch Predators U18 Girls 0-3 FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's
The final score may not reflect how disputed this match was, especially in the first half. After an early golazo by Amorette Rubio, both teams traded chances but a combination of poor finishing and goalkeeping dexterity prevented both teams from making any progress. The moment the second half started, though, Tayler Schade picked up a pass by Ayah Elmallah and put the score 2-0. A few minutes later, Audrey Bennett scored from the spot and that was the final score of the match. Annette Allen picked up a very deserved Player of the Match award and Makayla Townes made her debut in net with a shutout.

12/Aug/2021 - Waterloo United GU18D 0-1 FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's
It was an interesting match, with many known faces in the opponent team. Berlin attacked and attacked but just could not score a goal. It wasn't until the second half when Amelia Reiner scored with a long shot after an assist by Annette Allen. Rylea Schade picked up the POTM award and it was Florencia Almada's turn to debut in the net and get a clean sheet.

19/Aug/2021 - FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's 3-0 Cambridge United U21 Women
Unfortunately, this game never took place, as Cambridge forfeited due to not having enough players available. With this win, Berlin had already (mathematically) clinched the league, but the ladies wanted to celebrate on the pitch...

24/Aug/2021 - FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's 7-3 Waterloo United GU21D
This was a goal festival!!! The score was 3-1 within 10 minutes of the first half, something absolutely unusual. And goals kept coming and coming until the final 7-3. Berlin goals were scored by Audrey Bennett, Alicia Marques, Tyler Schade (Rylea Schade), Amelia Reiner, Tayler Schade again, Sarah Buchanan, Amorette Rubio (assisted by Alicia Marques). Sarah Buchanan picked up the POTM award.

26/Aug/2021 - Kitchener Spirit U18-21 Women's 0-2 FC Berlin Academy U21 Women's
The season ended the same way it had started, with the ladies picking up a 2-0 victory at Woodside Park. This time we were the visiting team, playing against Kitchener. The atmosphere was really nice, with players, coaches and parents of both teams really enjoying an evening full of good soccer. Tayler Schade scored after a great through ball by Audrey Bennett, and then Audrey herself scored the second goal with a header off a corner kick aptly executed by Amelia Reiner. The returning Makayla Townes picked up her third shutout in as many games and Audrey Bennet took the POTM award.

----------------------------------------

And that was it, 8 wins in as many games. Great soccer played by our ladies. It was a stellar season by a fantastic group of 20 athletes, led by an all-women coaching team: Sabrina Delic (Head Coach), with Aubrey Formica, and players Amelia Reiner and Laura Goli assisting with practices and games.

Sarah Buchanan was selected by the coaching team as the MVP of the season. Sarah ended with a record of 11-0-1 including the games she played up, absolutely amazing!

Congratulations, ladies!!!
