Our girls finally broke the curse and got a big W at South Common Park last night. It was a tough one, though, in part because of the wet field conditions, the decidedly biased refereeing (19 fouls against us, only three against the home team) and the fact that we definitely were not at the top of our game for most of the evening.
After a 0-0 first half in which we didn't do very well at all, our young ladies went back on the field with renewed energy and focus. Just a few minutes in, Annette Allen crossed the ball after a nice run and Eva D'Andrea was able to capture the rebound and send the ball in. A few minutes later, Maeva Lichtensteiger stole the ball from an Erin Mills defender and took a long shot that surprised the local team's keeper.
At that point, the interruptions by the referee were constant and in the vast majority of cases, against our team. Many times he overruled his assistant, giving the home team free kicks and changing the direction of the throws whenever the ball went out. We thought that the game was going to end 2-0 anyway, but toward the end of the second half, the ref gave yet another questionable free-kick. The Erin Mills player took a long high shot that our keeper could not control and ended going into the net after a few rebounds.
So, in summary, our team ended picking up a much-needed win but left the field with the thought that things could -should- have gone much better. We will return to the same field next week, for yet another game against Erin Mills to end our summer season. Hopefully, we will capture another three points!
Player of the game award goes to Eva D'Andrea, who coincidentally played her last game as a U17 player. Great job this season, Eva!
